Hi! I’m so glad you are here!

About Me

Welcome! My name is Alyssum Reno-Smith, PhD, RDN, LD, and I currently work at The University of Alabama in Huntsville as a Clinical Assistant Professor in Kinesiology, where I oversee undergraduate internships and teach a variety of nutrition and exercise science classes. I’m also a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist licensed in the State of Alabama. Additionally, I recently completed my Ph.D. in Exercise Science and Health Promotion. I have a passion for sports nutrition, working with athletes who struggle with disordered eating and exercise dependence, and helping individuals become at peace with food. I look forward to connecting with you!

My Professional Philosophy

My passion for sports nutrition and overall health stems from being a former collegiate athlete and my desire to help others develop a healthy relationship with food. I believe that the definition of “health” is different for everyone, and I emphasize a health-at-every-size approach in my teaching and practice. The societal standards that individuals, especially athletes, experience can be exhausting and create impossible standards to live up to. I believe that my role is to educate and help individuals become at peace with food, body image, and exercise. Lastly, I value education, research, and learning, and I strive to continue to advance my knowledge to provide evidence-based recommendations in my teaching and practice.

  • Working with Alyssum helped me change my perspective in my relationship with food and exercise. For the first time in my life, I’m able to enjoy the foods I love without feeling guilty or using exercise as a punishment. I truly enjoyed my time with her and how she utilizes a judgement free space!

    - Megan

  • Alyssum helped me understand that it is okay to still be intentional in my food choices, without the need to overly restrict, and that I can still meet my goals as an athlete without having to follow an extremely rigid diet pattern.
